Shell V-Power in detail

The new unique formulation of Shell V-Power has several key components. Powerful engine cleaning technology is designed to remove engine deposits for more efficient burning, it's formulated to help reduce friction for better responsiveness, and its improved combustion effectiveness is designed to release the performance potential of your car, whatever you drive.

Powerful cleansing

While driving, deposits can develop around a car engine’s inlet valves, impeding the air flow and reducing power. Shell V-Power is designed to reduce the build-up of deposits and help remove existing ones, enabling the fuel to burn more efficiently.  This effective deposit control can help keep a new engine running like new for longer and help to rejuvenate older engines.

Friction Modification Technology

Shell V-Power also contains our advanced Friction Modification Technology, whose special components are designed to coat the cylinder wall. Friction reduction between the cylinder wall and the piston inside the engine helps to increase the total energy delivered to the wheels, to aid overall driving performance.

New formulation : Improved Combustion

Shell V-Power's enhanced octane rating is designed to help provide improvements in power delivery, helping drivers achieve maximum performance from octane responsive engines. Our new formulation takes Shell V-Power even further. With new Instant Response Technology, the formulation has been developed to combust more effectively and release more power - and offer these benefits to those cars which do not respond to increased octane quality. So the new formulation Shell V-Power can help you get more out of your car, whatever you drive.

Give it a try and see if you experience a difference.

Ferrari racing car on track

At Shell, we work with the best and learn from the leaders. Our technical partnership with Ferrari has allowed us to continue to develop, refine and enhance Shell V-Power road fuel, resulting in the new formulation designed to bring improved performance across engines technologies, whatever car you drive.

Our technical partnership

We work closely with the Ferrari team in Formula One to develop the highest performance Shell V-Power race fuels and gain the best reliability from Shell Helix Ultra racing lubricants for the Ferrari team. These learnings are used to develop Shell’s fuels for road cars, to help power and protect motorists worldwide.

A technical partnership that delivers

Enzo Ferrari produced his first Ferrari racing car, a Ferrari 125S, for a race in Piacenza, Italy in May 1947. Although it did not finish, it was quick from the outset, even leading the race at the time of retirement. When Enzo Ferrari set up his own team, he took Shell's racing fuel technology with him. Providing Ferrari with fuels and oils, we had the opportunity to develop our products in an extremely demanding environment, something we continue to do today.

.  As Stefano Domenicali, the Director of the Ferrari Formula One team, puts it:

"In all my years' experience, I have never seen a relationship so close between a partner and a team. The Constructors' title in 2008 definitely makes this the most successful partnership in the history of the sport."

The winning edge

Since Enzo Ferrari himself asked us to formally work with his racing team, we have been developing and refining fuels, and have helped power the Ferrari Formula One team to over 150 Grand Prix victories.

This includes 10 FIA World Constructors' Championship titles since 1999. The winning credentials of Ferrari with the support of Shell were summed up by Felipe Massa:

“2008 was a great year for me and the team.  The help of our partners, especially Shell, was for sure one of the main reasons we won our tenth Contructors’ Championship.”

The technical partnership has been renewed until 2010, so Shell’s scientists will continue to provide their expertise in racing fuel development.

Constant innovation

As part of our continuous development process, Shell provides Ferrari with full analytical services at every Grand Prix. Our team of experts in the Shell Trackside laboratory, situated in the Ferrari team compound, help ensure that Ferrari’s fuels and lubricants operate at peak efficiency and performance.  We constantly test racing fuel and oil in the Ferrari Formula One cars to help ensure that the cars can perform at their best on the track. As Michael Schumacher said

“It’s just so great to be part of history, not only in winning Formula One titles, but to be part of Shell’s technical partnership with Ferrari which began over 60 years ago.”

And in the words of Stefano Domenicali:

“Shell recently won our ‘Ferrari Innovation Award’ at a ceremony in Maranello, awarded for ongoing innovation in products that have contributed to improving the performance of our Formula One and Grand Turismo cars. I must say it is very well deserved.”

In anticipation of more race track successes, the 2009 Ferrari Formula One race car is supplied with Shell V-Power race fuel and Shell Helix Ultra racing oil.

From track to road

The new formulation of Shell V-Power has been developed with inspiration and learnings from the track with elite performance cars. We have taken what we learn on the track and translated it into a new performance fuel formulated to deliver a benefit for every type of car on the road. By constantly improving Shell V-Power race fuel and Shell Helix Ultra racing oil for Ferrari Formula One drivers, we have arrived at our new formulation of Shell V-Power road fuel helping drivers of all types of cars get the most performance out of every drop.

Every Ferrari road car leaves the production line in Maranello, filled with Shell V-Power and Shell Helix Ultra. How can Ferrari be so confident they are right for their vehicles? The answer lies in our constant development process. Our scientists work closely with Ferrari Formula One engineers and technicians. This gives us an in-depth understanding of engine performance in the extreme environment of Formula One, so they know what fuel and oils are needed.

Working with the best to deliver the best

We work with an uncompromising brand like Ferrari because, by providing the best possible race fuel and oil for their Formula One team, we have an extremely demanding environment for our products. Surviving the harshest of engineering tests gives us the valuable insights we need to keep improving Shell V-Power road fuel for motorists worldwide.

Shell and Ferrari - Over 60 years shared passion

1930s
Shell began supplying fuels and oils to Enzo Ferrari’s racing cars in the 1930s. Since then Shell has helped Ferrari win an incredible 134 Grand Prix races.

1947
In the early days of motor racing, engines were heavy units. They needed power and lots of it.

Fuels were a mixture of aviation fuel and benzene. Teams would flush the engine block with normal road fuel after each motor racing session, to prevent the corrosive fuel harming the engine parts. The Ferrari engine was protected with Shell oil.

Enzo Ferrari was one of the leading voices calling for more horsepower from his engineers. Shell responded with blended fuels that generated more horsepower and protected the Ferrari engine.

1951
Until the British Grand Prix in 1951, Alfa Romeo had won everything. But in July of that year, history was made when Jose Froilan Gonzalez drove his Shell-powered Ferrari 275 to victory, marking the beginning of Formula One’s most famous and successful dynasty.

A key reason behind the Ferrari’s win that year was its fuel economy. By developing a normally-aspirated 3 litre engine, the Ferrari used significantly less fuel than the super-charged Alfa Romeo. This, together with a special blend of Shell fuel, helped Ferrari take its first win at Silverstone.

1961
Shell worked closely together with Ferrari in 1960 to develop the engine for the Ferrari 156 before new 1.5 litre regulations for the following year. The 1961 car proved unbeatable and at the hands of von Trips and Hill, it won Ferrari’s first ever Constructors' World Championship. Hill also took the Drivers’ championship.

The 1960s marked the first time Formula One fuels approached those used on the road. Until that point, development of racing fuels had kept pace with the development of the cars. Then, with the introduction of smaller engine regulations in 1961, Shell pushed for a more standard fuel. The 130 octane blends were replaced with a more standard leaded gasoline mixture for all Formula One cars.

1971
At the start of the 1971 season, Shell entered a new period of Ferrari racing, with Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni driving the Ferrari 312. Thanks to aerodynamics the cars began to resemble the machines we see racing in every Grand Prix today.

Ferrari retained its traditional V12 set-up and Shell continued its bespoke production of fuels and oils for the engine and gearbox. The complicated blends from the 1950’s had been abolished, and teams were now running fuel similar to the road fuels of the time.

With the arrival of early aerodynamic wings, Formula One moved into yet another stage, with 1971 marking one of the last years that the fuel was standard. Soon, engineers were calling for the new fuel blends to match the falling lap times, and by the 1980s the fuel suppliers would be blending exotic mixtures not seen since the 1950s.

1996
World Champion Michael Schumacher was signed, together with Rory Byrne and Ross Brawn who joined the technical team. Under the guidance of Jean Todt and Luca di Montezemolo, a legendary team was established; powered by Shell.

Within months, Ferrari had secured its first win. A masterful driving display in Barcelona saw Schumacher climb to the top step of the podium in red for the first time.

By now, the complex blends of the 1980s had been abolished. Shell pioneered the development of unleaded racing fuel. This complied with European Health & Safety regulations. Unleaded fuels were later made obligatory for all Formula One cars.

By 1996, road car fuel used 95% the same components as those in racing car fuel. And the same team of scientists who developed Ferrari’s racing fuel later went on to formulate Shell V-Power for motorists in 1998.

2003
The Shell-powered team took a record fifth-consecutive Constructors’ World Championship, whilst Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher won a record sixth Drivers’ World Championship. The F2003-GA proved to be an awesome Formula One car. With great handling, excellent reliability and Shell fuel, the car is rightly regarded as one of Ferrari’s best.

Shell’s Formula One fuel components were now 99% similar to Shell V-Power.

Formula One cars now use a sulphur-free fuel that conforms to 2009 European Union regulations on sulphur content. In this way, Formula One has proved to be the ultimate testing ground for us to develop innovative road fuels.
